Last weekend, four girlfriends and I made our way to New York. I touched on this briefly a while back, but I’m going to delve in a little further here. I am a HUGE – and when I say huge – I mean – like I saw Rent 5 times on broadway my 8th grade year – HUGE – fan of musical theater.
That being said, any time I get the chance to see a new show – I am SO in. A while back, my dear college roommate, Rachel, told me about a new Broadway show, Dear Evan Hansen, starring Ben Platt (the magic loving kid from Pitch Perfect), and I have wanted to go ever since. Then in June, the show won a bunch of Tony awards including Best Musical, Best Book of a musical, Best Original Score, Best Orchestrations, and Ben Platt won for Best Actor in a musical. That made me want to go even more. Then… in August, Ben Platt said he’d be leaving the show in November, and that was the impetus for the whole trip.
I wanted to see him in this show – NO matter what.
I was bound and determined to go. Fast forward a couple weeks – a couple of my girlfriends decided to go too – so we booked our flights… bought tickets … and before we knew it, we had a full fledged mommas weekend in New York planned. Now let me be clear – this trip – was a unicorn. I can barely get a dinner together with my girlfriends, let alone a whole weekend across the country. That should’ve been our first indication of how special this weekend would be. The whole trip just fell into place seamlessly. We booked all our meals without a hitch, we got amazing tickets to two shows easily, and the hotel we stayed in was perfect for everything. Not to mention – we all had full coverage for our kids – BIG high fives to all our husbands – you guys were amazing. Then… about two days before our trip, we looked at the weather.. and get this… 75 degrees and sunny… NEW YORK IN OCTOBER?!?!? WHAT?!?
So although I had planned to wear the outfit you see in this post – my new favorite AG jeans with an amazing oversized coat – I had to go back to the drawing board and rearrange my suitcase. So even though I didn’t end up wearing this full outfit, I did end up wearing these amazing AG skinny jeans on the plane – there and back – and they were SO cozy! Red eyes are always freezing, and these AG Jeans kept me nice and warm. Not to mention, they have such a nice stretch and I never felt like I was being squeezed. <<< I think the true test of a good jean is if you can wear them on a long flight or car ride comfortably, and these were incredible. I also love the dark wash on these. They look perfectly polished, even after a day/night of travel. FYI – they run true to size and I got these via Zappos. Their selection is amazing! Also loving this amazing floral shirt, these burgundy coated jeans, and this fabulous jean jacket. <<< I NEED IT!
All in all the trip was a fairy tale. Our hotel, The New York Edition, was SO amazing. The rooms are bright and airy, the location is second to none, and they have Le Labo toiletries. A total game changer. The first day there we went to lunch at Freemans – I had the shrimp and grits and would highly recommend it. Then we went to Le Labo to stock up on perfume. From there we headed back to the hotel to freshen up, dinner was at Beauty and Essex (also amazing) and then we went to the Friday night performance of Dear Evan Hansen. If you don’t know anything about the play or Ben Platt, this is a great article >>> HERE.
His performance was nothing short of life changing. I cried for two straight hours. As a parent, as someone growing up in the digital age, as a human, the play tugged at my heart in so many ways. It was the best show I have ever seen – and probably will ever see. I just can’t say enough about it. If you can see it before Ben Platt leaves on November 19th… GO!!!
Saturday morning we headed to my girlfriend’s favorite bakery, Levain for their famous cookies, and then we strolled through central park. We had Sheep’s Meadow to ourselves, we sat on a rock overlooking the lake, and we just relished in a little “us” time. Between the four of us, we have 10 children – and counting, so these amazing moments to just sit in the quiet and take in the city, were unlike anything else. We walked back to our hotel, got ready for the day and headed to Gramercy Tavern for lunch. We did the tasting menu, and a blissful 3 hours of amazing conversation later, we were ready to shop. We walked to soho, shopped until we could shop no more, and then walked home. From there we got ready for dinner, and headed to THE most amazing Italian restaurant Scalini Fedeli – where we did our second tasting menu in one day :/ We’re moms on vacation!! Our reservation was at 8:30 and we didn’t get home until 12:30. That dinner was one of the best of my life. I laughed so hard I cried numerous times. Not to mention – the food was insanely good – like I said, one of the best meals of my life.
The next morning we headed to the Upper East Side for brunch, and to find a toy store for the kiddos. Then we saw A Book Of Mormon – which was amazing, but in all honesty, it was a disappointment after Dear Evan Hansen. From there, we grabbed a late lunch/dinner at Mexicue – amazing mexican food/salads – and then we headed to the airport.
For the flight home, I changed back into my trusty AG jeans that you see in this post. They are just SO cozy. Literally they’re like really nice leggings. I am obsessed. Then I snuggled into my seat, put on the Dear Evan Hansen soundtrack, and slept most of the way home.
Like I said, the trip was a fairy tale. And the best part is that we made a pact… the next time Ben Platt is in a show… we’re going back!!! I cannot wait!
