I swore to myself I wasn’t going to complain or shame the city of San Francisco in any way before I left it- and I am going to try to hold myself to that standard. But I do want to talk about the one thing I will not miss: Bay Area traffic. Namely on Highway 101. It’s so crazy how everything in your life changes the second you find out you are pregnant. I didn’t believe it was true until it happened to me. I am so much more cautious about everything in my life now, and driving is definitely high up on that list. This is definitely a different post than what we usually share, but it’s important to me!
Reno is definitely going to be a different pace of life for me, and at the stage of life I am in right now, I am ready for it. As much as I will miss the hustle and bustle of the Bay Area, I will not miss the fact that it takes me one hour to get ANYWHERE because of traffic, or construction or accidents. It’s just getting worse and worse each the years.
Obviously, accidents happen everywhere but they seem to happen so often here- and as an expecting mom, that makes me so nervous! In Allstate’s America’s Best Drivers Report, San Francisco, the entire Bay Area, in fact, falls very very very low on the list. You can check out the whole report HERE. The Best Drivers Report actually named Highway 101 one of the country’s 15 “Risky Roads” – and it’s one I travel on every single day – so crazy to think about!
I am so happy to share that Allstate is granting a total of $150,000 for safety improvements on these 15 “Risky Roads” across the country — a lot of them right here in the Bay Area. Allstate is partnering closely with local transportation experts in the 15 cities with “Risky Roads” to leverage local expertise on what will make the road safer for drivers.
Tips for Driving in a Densely Populated Area like San Francisco:
- Learn about the “move-over” laws in your state. In addition to yielding to emergency vehicles, most states have laws that dictate what a driver should do when certain vehicles are stopped on the side of the road.
- Leave plenty of distance between you and other vehicles – NHTSA recommends at least three seconds between you and the vehicle in front of you. The faster you’re going, the more room you need to stop safely.
- Always keep your eyes on the road, stay vigilant and minimize distractions like cellphones.
- Stay alert and share the road with other vehicles, motorcycles, bikes and pedestrians. Always signal before turning or changing lanes to alert others on the road to your intentions.
- Obey the speed limit and give yourself enough time to safely get where you’re going.
- Be sure to have an emergency roadside safety kit with caution signs and flares, and have a roadside service lined up for when you need a tow.
