This post has been a long time coming because I definitely have some feelings about being a bridesmaid. I would like to start out by saying that I am speaking very generally, but very candidly in this post. I have been a bridesmaid A LOT. And to be honest, I usually always complained about it – call me a name if you want. But hear me out…..
I think that the idea of bridesmaids is super cute – and it’s such an honor to be chosen as one. But like all wedding traditions, things have changed over the years. My problem with it is how much it costs — and how eBay can save you and your bridesmaids a ton of cash. Let’s break it down, shall we?
Shop This Post:
The Cost of Being a Bridesmaid:
The “OMG You’re Engaged” Gift of champagne, bridal magazines, etc: $50.
Bridal shower gift: $50-200
Bridal shower outfit: $100-400
Bachelorette flight: $400-500
Bachelorette hotel or Airbnb: $300+
Food / Drink: $500
Lingerie Shower on the Bachelorette: $50
Bridesmaid dress: $400
Bridesmaid dress alterations: $80 minimum
Hotel for wedding weekend: $500-1000
Hair and makeup day of: $150
Wedding gift: $150+
So let’s add that up shall we, that’s almost $4,000 that us girls have to spend just because one of our friends is getting married. And that doesn’t even include manicure (“pale pink” of course), spray tan or Ubers to all of the above occasions. I am just going to come out and say it: THAT IS INSANE. I think that some of you may call me selfish, and say it isn’t about me, but living in the Bay Area is very expensive and to spend that much money on something that has absolutely nothing to do with you just rubs me the wrong way.
It’s a lot easier for me now that I am blogging full time to be able to manage the cost of this. Sometimes it’s more, sometimes it’s less – I’ve been on both sides of the spectrum, most of the time when I was teaching high school, and making less than $3,000 a month.
Now that I am engaged and on the other side of things, I have chosen not to have a bridal party. Mostly because that would make me a hypocrite, but also because I don’t want to force my friends to do that. My friends are all very successful, and I don’t think one of them would bat an eye at this request, but that’s not the point. Everyone’s financial situation is different but I have found a way to cut some costs if you do choose to have bridesmaids, or if you’re looking to save some cash on your own wedding dress.
My number one tip: eBay!!! Whether you need a dress for yourself, or for your bridesmaids, eBay is the way to go. They just launched their bridal page and have so many amazing options including this gorgeous gown. It retails for $395, but I found it on eBay for $119. And if you’re a last minute girl like me, no need to fret. eBay’s guaranteed delivery ensures delivery in three days on more than 20 million items! You can thank me later.
