For those of you who know me, you know that I love where I live. I was born in Connecticut and lived there until I was fifteen, but the summer before high school my whole family moved to northern Nevada — culture shock to. the. max. It was quite the adjustment, but before I knew it, I was in love with the desert, the Sierras, and most of all, Lake Tahoe.
I went to college in Northern California, and like clockwork, every summer I would come home and fall even more in love with the lake and the mountains. It’s been quite the affair ever since. When my husband and I first met, we bonded over our mutual infatuation with Tahoe. He proposed to me there, we were married lakeside, and last year we decided to make a little slice of Tahoe our own. We bought a tiny little cabin and as you can tell from my instagram (here), we’ve been enjoying it ever since.
We wanted a place for our family to create memories; not around a television, but around the dinner table playing board games. We wanted a place for our kids to go fishing with their grandfathers, a place where our kids and Henry can run free, and a place where we, as a family, can truly get away and get back to “us”.
Now that we have William, my husband and I have really been thinking about the things we’d like to pass down to him. Wonderful memories and a love of family are of paramount importance to be sure, but a love for the outdoors and the ability to disconnect from the outside world are important as well. With this in mind, one night over the Fourth of July holiday (after a few too many cocktails I might add), my husband and his cousin, Abby, (who is our nanny for the summer) set out to purchase some used kayaks for the cabin off of craigslist. Buzzed shopping always ends well. Gahhhh. :/
My husband wanted to teach his younger cousin a lesson in “negotiating” and she just wanted to go kayaking. So he gave her a budget. The deal was, if she went over budget, she would have to pay the difference. They shook on it, off the emails went, and the negotiating began. Happily I can report that both of them were successful in their endeavors; Abby is now a shrewd negotiator, and we are now the proud owners of not one, not two, but three, wonderful kayaks. Nothing makes me happier than knowing we’re working toward summers of good old fashioned, outdoor fun with our family.
Now to the outfit… the romper I’m wearing has become one of my favorites this summer. It works great as a cover-up for the beach and kayaking, but also doubles as an easy (and breastfeeding friendly) staple. I can wear it around with sandals during the day, and dress it up with heels and a blazer at night. Not to mention it is made out of the softest fabric… literally it feels like you’re not wearing anything at all, which is always a good thing!
Happy shopping and happy adventuring with your family this summer!
