I had known for a long time that I wanted to throw my husband a surprise 40th birthday. My husband is always taking care of everyone in our family, and I wanted to dedicate a night to him where he was the center of attention, and felt special. In theory, it was a really great idea, my husband loved it, and the party was a huge success… but I will never throw a surprise party — ever again.
I am horrible – HORRIBLE – at keeping secrets. I tell all my friends, if you have a secret, don’t tell it to me. I’m just bad at it. As you can imagine, throwing a surprise party for your husband means keeping A HUGE secret from the person you usually tell everything to… and to me… that was my own (albeit self imposed) version of hell. I singlehandedly almost ruined his surprise 40th birthday – every day – for three months. It was horrible.
Ok – enough about me. Back to the party. The night was amazing. We held it at the Nevada Museum of Art Skyroom (a truly stunning venue – definitely check it out if you haven’t yet) and every detail was perfect. The food was amazing, the venue was beautiful, and thanks to the amazing venue coordinator and my assistant, CC, I didn’t have to worry about a thing. So much of Joe’s family flew in from Nebraska, (he was SO surprised) and we were surrounded by nearly 100 of our nearest and dearest. It was absolutely perfect, and I was SO happy to have a night to celebrate my husband.
As women, we have bridal showers, baby showers, copious birthday celebrations with friends — and guys — they just don’t get those things. For once, I was happy to be able to make it all about Joe – lord knows he deserves it.
Thank you for reading along. I hope you enjoy these photos from Joe’s surprise 40th birthday. Also – if you have any events that require cocktail attire – I’ve linked some of my current favorites below! XooX
