A Life Update With Emily – Traveling With Two

We spent the past weekend in Omaha visiting Joe’s family – and it was an absolute blast. We went to the Zoo, we visited with family, William took his first dip in the hot tub with his “pop pop”… we watched  the Huskers lose… again. I kid, I kid.

In all seriousness it was such an amazing trip.

We traveled with William a ton when he was little. If you don’t remember my posts about traveling to Italy with William, you can read them >>> here, here and here. But ever since we had David, we’ve really put our traveling with children on hold. Maybe it’s because we were intimidated, maybe it’s because we had heard horror stories from everyone we knew about “traveling with two”, or maybe we were just waiting for the right excuse to get up and go.

Whatever the reason, I am SO  happy we went to Omaha and rid ourselves of all the anxiety about traveling with two. Now I’m not going to sugar coat it… traveling with two kids is no walk in the park. I always say… “you don’t take vacations when you travel with kids… you take trips.” And it couldn’t have been more true. We set our expectations low, and went with the flow as much as we could, <<< Probably the best advice I have when traveling with kids, and we just tried to live in the moment as much as possible.

Pointers I learned this trip for traveling with two…

  • Use that Baby Bjorn!!! I have never really used mine. Ever. but my girlfriend Keeli rocks hers all  the time and it totally inspired me to bust mine out this past weekend. Thank God I did. I was able to blog while David slept on me on the plane – I always had my hands free – and to be honest, David slept SO much in it, that he was in a great mood all weekend long!
  • Don’t order drinks on the plane.  It’s just dumb. Uncovered drinks with a toddler and a lap child = wet pants every time :/
  • Make sure to have plenty of games, toys, coloring books, iPads, distractions everywhere you go
  • Test your kids’ headphones before you leave. William’s Amazon Fire wouldn’t work with any of the headphones we tried. #Parentingfail we ended up buying him an old school DVD player and he watched Moana on there during our long flights.
  • Pack plenty of snacks every time you leave the house. This saved us from so many meltdowns!
  • Naptime will probably happen every time you get in the car – it is what it is. Go with the flow!
  • Bedtime is never on time. William went to bed at 11:00 one night because all of Joe’s family was over and he was so excited to see everyone. We paid for it the next day, but you just have to remember – things will go back to normal when you get home.
  • Be patient. I got complimented in the airport on how well I talked William through a potential meltdown – it was a nice reminder that even if your child is losing their mind, if you keep your cool – everything will be ok!

That being said, the next two trips Joe and I have coming up are without children, and as much as I know I am going to miss our kiddos, I am SO excited to have a little indulgent time for me.

My fist trip – sans children – is this Thursday. I am headed with a couple of girlfriends to New York to see some Broadway plays, eat great food, enjoy some amazing shopping, and to just have some good ‘ol Girl Time… in one of my favorite cities in the world. Joe really can’t stand New York, and he doesn’t enjoy musicals, so I am SO excited to go with just the girls. I have wanted to see Ben Platt – from Pitch Perfect- in Dear Evan Hansen ever since my college roommate, Rachel, told me about it. He just won a Tony for his role, which made me even more eager to go, but sadly, he is only in the show until the middle of November. I knew if I wanted to see him, I’d have to go ASAP. Add in a couple great girlfriends who love New York and musicals just as much as I do… nothing could be better.

I’ll be wearing this dress you see in the photos to dinner and one of the shows. It is so easy and comfortable, and I love that with OTK boots and a heavy black coat – it is totally New York weather appropriate. Also – something else I love about this dress, it is super roomy and comfortable while still being flattering. For all my pregnant mommas out there – this dress is perfect for you! If I had any cocktail attire fall/winter weddings to head to, this dress would be my first pick every time – you just can’t beat how adorable it is and how comfortable it is too!

Anyhow – have a wonderful start to your week, loves. And be sure to follow along on my New York adventure! XooX !
